I'm very much looking forward to beginning my ministry in the Darlington and Teesdale Circuit, and especially to meeting the folks at the churches I will be serving, and I'm grateful for the invitation to write a few words to introduce myself.
I grew up in Guisborough, a town on the edge of the North York Moors, so while I'm not quite in my native Yorkshire, it's near enough! I'm 54 (yes, I know I do look much younger – I wish!), and I'm beginning my 22nd year as a Methodist Minister.
Before going 'into the ministry' I worked for a computer software company in Liverpool, developing systems for the freight and shipping industries. After training at the Wesley Study Centre in Durham, I served my first appointment in Acomb, near York, and then ministered for 7 years in the North West Durham Circuit, while based in the village of Lanchester. For the past 10 years I've been serving in the Newcastle Central & East Circuit, and living in Kingston Park.
I am married to Tracey, and we have 2 grown up children, Sarah & Cameron. Sarah lives with us, and Cameron lives with his wife Rachel in Hebbon. Tracey is also a Methodist Minister, and is continuing her pioneering role as a Deacon in the Newcastle District.
I love music, and I am a keen musician, singer and songwriter (and occasionally include this in my preaching and leading of worship). For most of the places I've ministered in I've been just about the only Middlesbrough FC supporter – but I'm guessing there may be a few fellow supporters here! I'm glad to be a little closer to the Riverside Stadium.
I enjoy camping, and hiking, and try to stay fit by playing badminton.
Moving to a new appointment always brings a mixture of excitement and nervousness at what lies ahead, but I'm sure I can count on your prayers, patience and support, and look forward to sharing with you in worship, discipleship and mission, and seeing what God has in store for us.
Every blessing,
Gavin
